Devizes is a small Georgian market town in north Wiltshire. It is a wonderful base to explore Wiltshire. Stonehenge, Avebury, Silbury Hill, Bath, Lacock and Salisbury are all easily reached in under an hour for fabulous days out.
Devizes is probably best known for the Kennet and Avon Canal's Caen Hill flight of 29 locks, which rise 237 feet in 2½ miles. It truly is a magnificent site but there is so much more to see and do in and around Devizes.
Home to one of the biggest surviving family breweries in the country, Wadworth's still deliver their beer by horse-drawn drays to the many pubs in Devizes. Check their website for details on the annual Beer Festival and popular tours and events. We have new microbrewery in town too, The Vaults.
Why not plan your visit to fall on one of our many festivals and carnivals where the town comes alive - there is the Food and Drink Festival, the Christmas Parade of Lanterns, the totally amazing Devizes International Street Festival, the more traditional Carnival, the Regency Ball, the Confetti Battle, Jazz or Comedy Festival ...there really is something for everyone.
Devizes hosts a weekly general market on a Thursday. There are regular farmers markets as well as collectors and flea markets with a host of delightful antique shops to browse. Enjoy a day at Henry Aldridge & Sons – auctioneers and renowned authority on the Titanic.
You could just wander around and admire the many unspoilt buildings and independent shops we have in Devizes like Joan Pressley's Hat Shop and The Hen House. Small, friendly, polite, old fashioned, surprising and totally unique - there is so much more than meets the eye....just ask for recommendations.
